  • It’s all in the chip

    emv-card-2

The embedded chip is becoming an industry standard in the U.S. for card payments and at ATMs with its next level of protection. It has successfully reduced counterfeit fraud around the world.

What makes the new EMV Chip better?
EMV Chips generate an unique, one-time code that is needed for each transaction to be approved. The new EMV Chip feature makes it nearly impossible for fraudsters to replicate in counterfeit cards, providing greater security and peace of mind for you.

    Worldwide acceptance
The EMV Chip is the global standard for card security. Europe, Asia, Canada, Mexico and South America have already embraced chip technology — so your card will be easier to use outside the U.S. Your Republic Bank EMV Chip card will now be more secure to use when traveling abroad.

  • Using your new EMV Chip Card

    Check-out procedures may vary
Your new EMV Chip card requires a new terminal. You may still encounter old terminals at some merchants for a period of time. Your new card will work in either since your card has both the chip and magnetic strip.

At a Merchant with an EMV Chip Card Reader
Merchants will soon be transitioning to chip card readers. The payment process is slightly different. You will be directed to insert your EMV Chip card until the transaction is complete. EMV Chip card readers may vary, but the process will be the same. Always follow the prompts on screen. Remember to take your card when finished.

If the merchant does not have EMV Chip card readers, they will instruct you on how to complete your transaction.

At an ATM with an EMV Chip Card Reader
ATM machines will also be transitioning to EMV Chip card readers. Remember a chip-enabled ATM will hold your card for the duration of the transaction. Always follow the prompts on screen. Remember to take your card when finished.

    1. Insert your card in the ATM as you do today.
    2. If prompted, re-insert your card and leave it in the ATM until your transaction is complete.
    3. Your card will be released at the end of the transaction. Always remember to take your card, receipt and any cash with you.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

    Q. Will my card number change?
    A. Yes, in order to help protect your account, we’re giving you a new card number.

    Q. Will my PIN number change?
    A. No. You will retain the same PIN number.

    Q. Where can I use my chip-enabled credit card in the U.S.?
    A. Since the U.S. is just starting its transition to chip technology, your card will have both a chip and a magnetic stripe. This way, you can still use your card anywhere in the U.S. that accepts MasterCard™, regardless of whether a chip reader is available. As a growing number of merchants switch to chip card readers in the U.S., you’ll notice that you’ll start to use your chip more and more.

    Q. Can I still get a non-chip card?
    A. No. Republic Bank is committed to card security, and chip technology is an important, proven tool that helps fight counterfeit fraud. All products – both credit and debit – will transition to chip technology. In fact, the industry as a whole in the U.S. is migrating to chip technology.

    Q. Are there any additional fees associated with chip cards?
    A. There is no additional cost to have or to use your new card with smart chip technology.

    Q. What happens if I mistakenly swipe my chip card at a chip-capable terminal instead of inserting it?
    A. If the terminal is a chip-enabled terminal, you will receive a prompt from the terminal to insert your card.

    Q. What information is stored on my chip card?
    A. The chip on the card stores the same type of information that is already stored in the magnetic stripe. Rest assured no personal information is stored on the chip card.

    Q. Where can I use my chip-enabled credit card globally?
    A. Internationally, chip technology has already been adopted as the industry standard. You’ll be able to use your chip card anywhere that MasterCard™ is accepted. As of July 2015, unattended kiosks that accept MasterCard™ should now accept payment with or without PIN according to their new guidelines. If a merchant/kiosk asks you for a PIN, first verify that MasterCard™ is accepted. If so, you may be able to select one of the following to bypass the PIN prompt: “Cancel,” “Enter” or “Continue.” If the card reader still will not accept your card without a PIN code, there may be staff in the area to assist you. Otherwise, local currency may be needed in this situation.

    Q. Will I have to change my card information on any recurring payments?
    A. Your card has a new number so if you have any recurring payments that use the old card number you will need to update those accounts. This applies only to card payments, not payments by account number or Online Bill Pay.

    Q. How will I know if a merchant’s terminal accepts chip cards?
    A. Most terminals will have instructions that inform you to insert your card. If you swipe your card at a terminal that accepts chip technology, you will be prompted to insert the chip card into the terminal. Your chip card should be immediately recognized and accepted. Just sign or enter your PIN, take your card and you’re done!

    Q. I requested a “debit” at a chip merchant but why wasn’t I prompted to enter my PIN or given the option of cash back?
    A. From time to time, you may encounter merchants or terminals that aren’t fully enabled to accept chip “debit” or “PIN” purchases. If you are asked to sign for the purchase as required by the merchant, the transaction will be debited from your available balance just like a debit/PIN purchase. If you desire cash back, remember that you can always visit any Surcharge Free STARsf Network ATM or a Republic Bank of Chicago Branch to withdraw funds free of charge.
