The Most Common Scams to Watch Out for This Summer

With summer officially underway, it’s the perfect time for vacations, outdoor adventures, and making lasting memories. Unfortunately, it’s also peak season for scammers looking to take advantage of the relaxed mindset that comes with warmer weather. Whether you’re planning a getaway or just enjoying local activities, staying informed is the first step to protecting yourself and your finances. Here are the most common scams to be aware of this summer – and how to avoid them.

Vacation Scams and Fake Rentals

As people rush to book last-minute trips, scammers are targeting vacationers with fake rental listings on popular platforms. These listings often feature beautiful photos, low prices, and urgent messaging to push you into making a fast decision. Once you send a deposit or full payment, the scammer disappears – or worse, you show up to a nonexistent property.

To stay safe, always verify listings through official travel platforms, avoid wiring money, and be suspicious of deals that seem too good to be true. Consumer.ftc.gov reminds you to never pay for “prize” vacations. No legitimate company will ask you to pay for a prize.

Concert and Event Ticket Fraud

Summer is concert season, and that means ticket scams are on the rise. Scammers often create fake websites or social media pages that mimic legitimate ticket sellers. They lure you in with discounted prices or “sold-out” tickets only available through them. After paying, you either receive fake tickets or nothing at all.

Always purchase tickets directly from the official event organizer or well-known platforms. Check for secure payment options and avoid sellers who ask for cash apps or wire transfers.

Online Marketplace Cons

From yard sales to secondhand finds, online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist get more active in the summer months. Unfortunately, so do scammers. They may advertise items they don’t own or send fake payment confirmations if you’re the one selling.

If you’re buying, meet in public places and inspect the item before paying. If you’re selling, wait for payment to clear and never ship items before doing so. Be cautious of overpayments and anyone unwilling to meet in person.

Utility and Home Repair Scams

With increased home improvement projects during the summer, scammers often pose as contractors or utility workers. They may knock on your door offering deals on roof repairs, driveway paving, or tree trimming—asking for money upfront and never returning.

Before hiring any contractor, check their license, verify reviews, and get everything in writing. Never agree to full payment before the work begins.

Stay One Step Ahead This Summer

Scammers thrive during times when people are distracted, and summer is no exception. Whether you’re booking travel, attending events, or making home improvements, a few smart precautions can help you avoid costly mistakes. Stay alert, verify before you pay, and trust your instincts.
