Understanding and Preventing Card Skimming

When you are using your card in “unsupervised” locations like ATMs or gas stations, it’s important to take proper steps to protect your card from what is called “card skimming”. There are many security concerns to stay aware of when using an ATM or card reader, whether it’s a drive-up, in a shopping center, in a convenience store, etc. Here’s how to keep you and your information safe.

1. Inspect Card Readers Closely

ATM and other card reader skimmers are quite dangerous as they can be hard to recognize. Essentially, criminals will install equipment on legitimate machines that collect the user’s card number and PIN when scanned. This is more likely to occur on standalone ATMs or machines in areas with little to no security such as gas pumps. Before inserting your card into an ATM, examine the machine for any suspicious looking equipment. Oftentimes, a skimmer will stick out a couple of extra inches from the card reader. If you have any doubts, find another ATM that you know is under video surveillance or is inside of a bank.

2. Protect Your PIN (personal identification number)

Firstly, never share your PIN with anyone or lend your card to someone. Always be sure to memorize your pin and do not write it down or keep it on your person – access to your PIN is the easiest way for criminals to steal your debit information.

When you are using the ATM, always stand directly in front of the machine and cover the keys with your hand when entering your PIN. If there is anyone standing too closely or who can see the screen, ask them politely to step back or do not go through with the transaction at that time.

Covering your PIN when entering it also helps to avoid theft from hidden cameras installed illegally and used to steal your information.

3. Use a Machine That is Properly Supervised

If you feel suspicious about using a card reader or ATM, choose instead to use machines that are less likely to be tampered with by criminals. This includes inside of banks and convenience stores where employees can keep a close eye on the card readers.

4. Pay With Cash

While debit and credit cards are now one of the most common ways to pay for goods, if you are wary of criminal behavior when using card readers, paying with cash will always be a good way to ensure your card information cannot be compromised when making a purchase.

5. Use Card Controls for an Extra Layer of Security

Card controls provide a new layer of security by allowing clients to manage and monitor their debit card usage directly from their smartphones or online banking platforms. These controls offer a range of customizable features that enhance security and provide peace of mind, such as an on/off switch, transaction limits, geographic restrictions, merchant category controls, and real-time alerts. These controls enable an instant response to suspicious activity, which can make all the difference in minimizing risk.

5. Keep An Eye on Your Accounts

It is imperative for you as the debit card user to regularly monitor your checking accounts for suspicious activity or anything that seems off. If you are wary of multiple fraudulent transactions or just one, you should always report suspected fraud immediately to your bank or credit union.
